Knowledge of fundamentals is the golden key that opens the chief mysteries of religion; it gives us a whole system and body of divinity, exactly drawn in all its lineaments and lively colours; it helps us to understand many of those difficult things which occur in the reading of the word; it helps to untie many Scripture knots.
Thomas Watson, 1620-1686, A Body of Divinity, 1 A Preliminary Discourse to Catechizing, II, 1, 2, (p.11 from monergism.com)
Can a broad understanding of fundamental principles help us to solve specific problems in theology? How might we obtain that understanding?

Perhaps the most fundamental principle is one's theology of God?
ReplyDeleteI agree that what we know of God is the fundamental. Though we have to learn of God from somewhere. I think there needs to be a process where we learn more of God and then use it to correct our general understanding so we can learn still more of God.
DeletePerhaps we should start with God Incarnate?
DeleteCertainly a good place to start.
