A Touch of Humor - Assessment

What is the spiritual state of this country? Why?

  1. I am still concerned about the greatest moral issue, the economy. Our economic and judicial systems are prejudiced against the poor. Congressional actions/inactions have us deep in debt and with budgets that do not balance.

In addition to this there seems to be a continuing governmental apathy by conservatives as well as liberals towards abortion.

On the positive side, things have gotten better since I was born. More people seem to have equal rights and freedoms. Many charities in KC are serving the homeless and the poor better than ever.

    What is your assessment Mike?

    1. While I hate to disagree with my little cartoon characters (especially when they are all agreed), I do not know that it is easy to evaluate the spiritual state of a country. (Paul says he does not even pass ultimate judgment on himself, 1 Corinthians 4:3-5.) The knee-jerk reaction (as exhibited by my cartoon characters) seems to be a result of the loss of political clout of Christians and the Christian church organization in this country. I am not clear if this is good or bad. Clout enables us to do good that we may not otherwise be able to do, but it also tends to conform us to the culture so we do not question its values. The best situation is hard to identify.

But I think, on the whole that any country or time has bad things and good things about it. We have improved in our treatment of different races and decreased in our care for the unborn. Our treatment or the poor is bad, but it is hard to come up with a time and place where it has not been bad. On the whole I think we are better served by trying to change things we know are wrong than trying to figure out our exact status.

  2. Good thoughts Mike.

I guess I am distrusting of candidates that make promises that they know that they are unable to keep.

It is hard to keep from cynicism when so many of them appeal to our heartfelt values then basically do nothing to advance those values.

I agree with you that on the whole, our country has bad things and good things going on. Guess that is why I am not a gloom and doomer. ツ

    1. I feel the same way about candidates. I cannot say that this country is in great shape spiritually. I doubt the world has ever been in great shape spiritually. But exaggerating things does not help.
